Tax Brackets
The state of North Carolina has six marginal tax brackets with the lowest being 6.00% to the highest at 7.75%. These marginal rates will apply only to earnings within each marginal tax bracket.
Single Tax Brackets
- Earnings between $0.00 and $12,750, you will pay 6.00%
- Earnings between $12,750.00 and $60,000, you will pay 7.00% + $765.00
- Earnings over $60,000.00, you will pay 7.75% + $4,072.50
Married Tax Brackets
- Earnings between $0.00 and $21,250, you’ll pay 6.00%
- Earnings between $21,250.00 and $100,000, you will pay 7.00% + $1,275.00
- Earnings over $100,000.00, you will pay 7.75% + $6,787.50
Extensions
If you are unable to file your return by the due date, you may apply for an automatic six-month extension for time to file. To receive an extension you must file Form D-410. You must apply for an extension regardless of whether or not you will be due a refund.
