Prior to submitting a Colorado notary public application to the Notary Commission, you must take and pass a notary public education course. The applicant may only use the courses that are approved by the Secretary of State’s office. There are online and classroom classes available for your convenience.

  • Requirements
    • Must be at least 18 years of age.
    • Must be a resident of the state of Colorado.
    • Must never have been convicted of a felony.
    • Cannot have been convicted of any misdemeanor that would involve any dishonest acts in the past five years from the date of application.
    • Must have the ability to read and write in the English language.
    • Could never have had a notary commission revoked for any reason.

How to Become a Notary

Step 1- Completion of Notary Education – You must complete an online or classroom notary education course and receive your certification prior to application.

Step 2 – Online State of CO. Notary Exam – The online exam (Login and Start) for the state of Colorado will test your knowledge of the state Notary Public Laws as well as your understanding of guidelines and procedures. The test is “open book” and takes approximately 30 minutes to complete. Once the exam has been completed, you will have the opportunity to print your certification.

Step 3 – Notary Application – Once you’ve completed your training and state exam, you will receive a notary ID so that you may complete your applicationaffirmation, and scan the rest of your information for e-file of all of your documentation. You will also pay your fees online. No bonding is required in the state of Colorado.

Step 4 – Order Your Notary Seal and Supplies – Once you have completed all of your necessary steps to obtain your Notary privileges and received your commission you may then order all of your notary supplies. You must keep a journal of all activities performed by you as a Notary Officer of the State of Colorado.
