How to Write a Birthday Thank You Note
Thank you notes should be hand written in order to make them more personal and convey a genuine sense of appreciation. You can find stationary or cards pre-made with blank space for you to write in to make the notes more polished. Generally, birthday thank you notes should begin with a personalized greeting, be about three to four sentences in length, and then finish with a closing.
The greeting should address the recipient by his or her first name. It would establish an awkward tone to address someone close enough to celebrate your birthday with a title such as “Dear Mr. Jones.” Address your friends as you would in conversation.
For the first sentence, you can jump into thanking them for the gift or for being present at your celebration. Spending time with your friends and loved ones is more important than receiving gifts, so you may want to thank them for their presence first. Just be honest and warm. You can give a specific reason why you enjoy that guest’s company, such as his sense of humor.
When you thank the guest for your gift, say why you are glad to get it. If it’s a gift card to a local coffee shop, for example, tell the guest how much you love that shop’s mochas or croissants. It’s especially important to tell them how much you loved the gift if it was one of the few gifts you really wanted, when you thought some of your other gifts were just so-so. Of course, if you received money as a gift, tell the person what you hope to spend it on and how you will enjoy what you plan to buy.
The last sentence or two of the note can reaffirm how much you enjoy your relationship with that guest and how you appreciated her presence. If it’s a coworker, you can say how she makes the workplace more pleasant or how you two increase each other’s productivity. You can be more personable with people you see exclusively outside of work. Feel free to express your feelings, but consider keeping the ending light and friendly as well. For example, you could just express interest in the next time you see each other or that you hoped your guest enjoyed the cocktails.
End the note with a warm salutation, such as “Sincerely yours,” and you will be finished with a birthday thank you note that is sure to warm your friends’ hearts.
