A triathlon is a three part athletic event consisting of first swimming, then bicycling, and, finally, running. This grueling competition comes in different variations, with the Olympic Triathlon, also known as the 5150, covering a total of 51.50 kilometers. It consists of a 1.5-kilometer swim followed by 40 kilometers on the bicycle, and, finally, a 10-kilometer run.

Using a Triathlon Checklist

This is no event for novices, and it calls for a very seasoned athlete who has trained many additional months for this specific challenge. The Triathlon Checklist just for the equipment required alone is uncommonly large, and each of the three legs of the event has its own specialized requirements. Don’t forget to start gathering your items early, as local stores tend to sell out early on the eve of big events.

For swimming, the Triathlon Checklist of items includes, of course, a swimsuit, swim cap and swim goggles. You will also need a wetsuit, and to protect your skin, some skin lubricant, Vaseline or baby oil. You will also want to include earplugs, goggle defogger solution, and, for cold weather swims, a neoprene swim cap. You will also need towels.

For the bicycle portion of the race, your Triathlon Checklist begins with a specialized bike, and a bike helmet. You’ll also need bicycling shoes, shorts and a jersey. You’ll also certainly want to include bottled water on your list, as well as some concentrated food to keep you going. You’ll also need basic repair tools, including spare tubes for your tires in case of a flat, and don’t forget a basic air pump. And, don’t forget to include sunglasses and sunscreen on your list.

The last leg of your triathlon, the running portion of the event, also engenders its own special requirements. Your Triathlon Checklist will include running shoes and specialized running socks. Many experienced triathletes insist that the ideal sunglasses for this leg of the event are different than those best suited for bicycling. And you will most definitely want more water, food and or energy bars. Also highly desirable to include is a visor or a cap to further shield your eyes from the sun. And, depending on the time of year, you may be wise to include a long sleeved jacket and tights to completely encase your legs.

There are some items, obviously, that you will need to include on your Triathlon Checklist that are needed for more than one leg of this event. One of these is a race belt, or its equivalent. The purpose of this item is to prominently display your race number, or other identifier on your person at all times.
