Using a Daily Lesson Plan Template
Lesson plans are all about structure. Following the components listed here will let you create a coherent plan that aids learning:
- Introduction and foundation
- Brain activation
- New information
- Practice and review
- Independent practice
- Closure
1. First, you need to establish the purpose or objective of the lesson: what the students should be able to do at its conclusion. For example, an objective could be “Understand the underlying factors that led to World War 1.” At this stage, it’s important to engage the students and contextualize the lesson and its objective. Can you use visuals to introduce the lesson in an engaging way and connect it to the students’ experiences?
2. Building off the introduction, brainstorm questions and concepts for the students to consider and engage them in conversation. This will let you clarify any confusion at an early stage in the lesson, and help the students become more interested.
3. Next, introduce the bulk of the new material. Strive to do this in an active way rather than having students silently read or complete a worksheet. Lectures mixed with questions or group activities can be effective here.
4. Now the students are ready to practice using the new information under your supervision. This could involve having teams complete a writing assignment while you engage each team to make sure they are completing the assignment properly.
5. Next, the students should begin independent practice of the material. For students who are not ready for independent practice, have a backup activity ready to prepare them further. This could include pairing them with students who understand the lesson better, which will further enforce both students’ understanding of the lesson.
At the end of the lesson, connect each major idea discussed and summarize the entire lesson, then connect the lesson with previous lessons and with the overall goals of the course. For example, a lesson that covers gravitational force will play a major role in explaining the mechanics of the solar system. Putting the lesson in context will also help create interest as it will show why the lesson is important.
