Regional Transit Service buses transport tens of thousands of people all across the country every day, particularly in major metropolitan areas. Using an RTS bus schedule will let you plan your trip effectively, whether you’re commuting to work or just going across town and back.

Bus schedules are generally similar no matter the area the bus system is in. Generally, you can find spreadsheets located on the transportation authority’s website that display bus schedules. First, you have to select the particular line or route you want. Often, this will simply be a number, such as “Bus 66.” Then, you select the direction you are traveling in. This will bring up a spreadsheet with each bust stop on the top and the times a bus is scheduled to stop at that stop in the columns below.

Buses will arrive more frequently during rush hours in the morning and evening. For example, buses in Boston arrive at a stop about every 10 minutes during rush hour, but there can be about 20 minutes between buses late at night and at midday. Be sure to check whether the schedule is different on the weekend, as buses and rail service tend to run less frequently on the weekend and maintain shorter hours of service.

Bus Schedule Apps

In addition to using a transit authority’s website to get around town, there are a number of apps you can get for major cities to help you plan out a trip and catch a bus on time. By knowing exactly when the bus will arrive, you can wait at your leisure at home or a nearby shop before going to the stop.

Generally, these apps let you select a route and a stop, and they display exactly how many minutes until the next bus arrives at that stop, and whether there are any delays.

Some apps offer even more features. The iNextBus app, for example, lets users view bus movement in real time on a map. This app also lets you view multiple routes on a map at once, so you can determine the best one more easily.
