Context is a way of using words and phrases in order to describe a word. The information that is related may be a definition, synonym, antonym, or example.

Although you always have the option to find the meaning of a words in a sentence with a dictionary, it’s not always the most practical way of learning new words. Dictionaries aren’t always readily available, so it’s great if you can learn to understand the words around the word you don’t understand in order to acquire the definition or gain an understanding of what the word means.

These things being said, some words have more than one definition, so you would not necessarily want to depend upon completely upon a context clue in a situation whereas an exact definition is required.

Examples

Celestial bodies, like the moon, sun and stars, have amazed mankind for many centuries.

You may not understand what the word “Celestial” means or the term “celestial bodies,” but if you look at the clues in the sentence, it will be much easier to understand. In this case, the definition is supplied right in the sentence- “like the moon, sun and stars,”- this would most likely tell us that “celestial bodies,” would be objects or planets that would be located in the sky, space or in the heavens.

Obviously this is one of millions of examples and there is so much more to learn about context clues.This aspect of reading comprehension can really be a lot of fun.
