Tax Brackets in Kentucky

The state of Kentucky has 12 marginal tax brackets that will range from the lowest at 2.00% to the highest Kentucky tax bracket of 6.00%.  The marginal rates will apply to earnings within your particular applicable tax bracket. These marginal tax brackets will be the same in the state of Kentucky for single taxpayers as they are for married couples filing jointly. Be certain that you are applying the most current 2013 Kentucky tax bracket.

Single Individuals Tax Bracket:

  • Earnings between $0.00 and $3,000, you will pay 2.00% only
  • Earnings between $3,000.00 and $4,000, you will pay 3.00% + $60.00
  • Earnings between $4,000.00 and $5,000, you will pay 4.00% + $90.00
  • Earnings between $5,000.00 and $8,000, you will pay 5.00% + $130.00
  • Earnings between $8,000.00 and $75,000, you will pay 5.80% + $280.00
  • Earnings over $75,000.00, you will pay 6.00% + $4,166.00

Married Couples Tax Bracket:

  • Earnings between $0.00 and $3,000, you will pay 2.00% only
  • Earnings between $3,000.00 and $4,000, you will pay 3.00% + $60.00
  • Earnings between $4,000.00 and $5,000, you will pay 4.00% + $90.00
  • Earnings between $5,000.00 and $8,000, you will pay 5.00% + $130.00
  • Earnings between $8,000.00 and $75,000, you will pay 5.80% + $280.00
  • Earnings over $75,000.00, you will pay 6.00% + $4,166.00

Extensions

The state of Kentucky will automatically grant a six-month state tax extension if you cannot meet the filing deadline. You must have properly requested a federal tax extension through IRS Tax Form 4868. Attach a copy of Form 4868 to your Kentucky tax return when you file.
