Before you step in front of the class to teach your students, you should create a lesson plan to streamline your work and help the students learn as effectively as possible. Actively planning your lessons will help you make your teaching more creative and engaging, making students more likely to retain knowledge and develop interest in learning.

Creating lesson plans can take a substantial amount of time, however, so it is helpful to find a lesson plan template to get yourself started. A good lesson plan should contain the following elements:

  • Learning objectives
  • Duration of each part of the lesson
  • Assessments
  • Methods of instruction
  • Materials

Learning objectives set the structure of your lesson, as you will choose materials and methods in order for the students to achieve that objective. For example, one day’s learning objective for an English class could be to distinguish between independent and dependent clauses and learn how to join them properly. You can then find effective ways to engage students to learn how to do so. Of course, estimating the amount of time will help you teach all the material you need to teach without bleeding into time you need for later lessons.

Preliminary Considerations

Before you actually begin writing the plan, there are a few factors to consider outside of the material and logistical aspects.

Materials: You will be limited in the methods you can use by the supplies that are available to you. Short presentations can be a great way to reinforce your verbal instruction and engage the students, but think about whether the equipment in the classroom will display your presentation and whether you can create it in a compatible format.

Students: Think about the methods that engage your students best, and the students’ backgrounds as well. What works best for teaching affluent students will not necessarily work well for students from poor backgrounds.

Long-term planning: Teachers should also think about how the lesson fits within the week’s other lessons and the entire course. Is the lesson building on other material and toward an overall greater understanding of the course? Thinking about the entire course will also help you schedule lessons so they do not repeat material or eat into each other’s time.
