A SMART goals worksheet allows an individual to create a template to plan and organize a project to ensure it is created by a certain date. SMART is an acronym for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-based. By declaring exactly what you expect to achieve, exactly how to measure results, and when the results can be achieved, you approach your goal with a nuanced strategy that’s more likely to succeed.

How to Write

1. For the first requirement, making the goal specific, you have to ask a number of questions about the goal:

Who is involved?

What do you need to accomplish?

When and where does the goal need to be accomplished?

What are the limitations and requirements of the goal?

Why must you accomplish the goal? What are its benefits?

For example, a vague goal would be something similar to “Lose weight this year.” A properly specific goal would be “Count calories and exercise for one hour four times per week until you lose 25 pounds.”

2. Making sure the goal is measurable is the second step. This lets you keep track of your progress towards the goal. For this step, you would ask “How much?” or “How many?” Staying with the example above, this would be 25 pounds. Establishing this lets you know when your goal is complete.

3. The third aspect, that the goal is attainable, means that the goal should be realistic. This is a simple concept: If the scope of your goal is too great for your team to achieve, it won’t be able to achieve it. Does the team have the time and knowledge to accomplish the project?

4. Fourth, the goal must be relevant to other parts of your business or life. For example, the goal shouldn’t be to gain large amounts of lean muscle if you don’t want a bodybuilder’s appearance or to compete in strength competitions. If you just want to be in better shape, you can incorporate weightlifting without it being central to your plan.

5. Finally, the goal must be set in a time frame. Thus, you would establish a date to have concluded your goal, such as losing 25 pounds in 15 weeks.
