boss thank you letter shows class and gratitude after a decision has been made to resign or switch companies. Many employees have close relationships with their supervisors and learn a lot while working under them. So the letter is justified as an appreciation for the opportunity of having worked underneath them.

In many cases, bosses help you develop your skills a great deal, and they are sometimes experts in your field, making that development indispensable. Not only do good bosses help develop your skills, they also show patience and understanding as you learn your new role.

How to Write

Begin the letter with “Dear [First name of boss],” and then immediately thank him or her in the opening line. You can be specific here, or just begin with a general thank you message, but you should follow up with specific examples. Alternatively, you can begin with a general statement and story describing how your boss has supported you.

For example, you could state how your boss has mentored your growth as a sales representative, and provide specific examples of how he or she improved your skills, using maybe one or two actual instances where you interacted with your boss.

Next, it’s important to describe how your boss’s efforts have affected you. They probably improved your confidence for one. Did your boss teach you how to prepare each section of a monthly report, for example, improving your writing and organizational skills? Be specific.

Then, include a brief statement about how you think these specific improvements or the boss’s support in general will guide you in the future.

Tips

It’s best to send a written thank you note to your boss in the mail, as handwritten notes are more personable, and this will give him or her the opportunity to read the note alone. There are other occasions on which to thank your boss as well, such as when you receive a promotion, a recommendation, or an important assignment.

Do not come across as sucking up. So avoid lavish praise and exaggerated descriptions. Use moderate adjectives and verbs and plain language rather than fancy language and avoid repetition. This will help your letter appear more sincere as well.
