Two critical components of successfully teaching a concept are practice and assessment. By using equivalent fractions worksheets, you can have your students practice the skills of converting fractions and finding common denominators.

Using these worksheets can be an effective part of teaching other skills like:

  • Adding and subtracting fractions with common or uncommon denominators
  • Converting fractions to decimals
  • Reducing fractions to their lowest terms
  • Multiplying and dividing fractions

Worksheet Variations

Equivalent fractions worksheets come in several variations. The most common form would simply list a fraction such as 1/2 and then an incomplete fraction such as  /6, and the student would have to fill in the numerator of the incomplete fraction so that it equals 1/2.

Another type of worksheet will have problems that start with one complete fraction, and then a row of several incomplete fractions, each of which the student has to complete with a numerator or denominator to equal the initial fraction. Here is an example:

2/3  =  4/  =   /9  =  10/   =  14/   =  8/   =   /18

A third type of worksheet will feature visual representations of the complete fractions and the fractions the student must complete. For example, the worksheet could use pie graphs divided according to the denominators with the numerators colored in.

Another type of visual representation uses number lines divided with marks according to the fractions’ denominators, with the lines being the same length.

You can create most of these worksheets easily with a word processing program. In MS Word, for example, you can simply number each problem and then write out fractions in either 1/2 form or with a horizontal line.

To insert the traditional fraction with the horizontal line, you can use an EQ field by typing Ctrl + F9, and typing EQ \F(a, b) into the brackets that appear, except type your numerator where “a” is and your denominator where “b” is. Press Shift + F9, and you will create a fraction with a horizontal line. Then, you can simply leave spaces in places where you wish your students to fill in the correct numerators and denominators.
