The term “Letterhead” is usually taken to mean a common design present on all or most of the letters, Emails or faxes sent out by a business, an institution, or an individual. It usually includes a name, address, telephone number and Email address, and may also include a graphic that illustrates what the individual or organization stands for or epitomizes some core values.

There are many sources online from which you can download free Letterhead Templates. Most are designed to work with the world’s most widely used word processor, which is Microsoft Word. There are, of course, others designed to work with Google Docs, and Linux. Almost all are for the 8.5 by 11 inch portrait page standard.
What is a Letterhead
Typically, these Letterhead Templates will dictate where on the page the graphic will be located. Sometimes, there will be more that one graphic to choose from, and in others, you may have the option to insert your own artwork for the graphic.
In some cases, the user inserts such information as company name and address directly on the page itself. In others, there will be a side panel. Here, the user types in the relevant information, and the template itself inserts the information onto the appropriate spot on the template page.
In either case, the user saves the template as a new document. Where it is saved depends on the word processor and operating system being used. When it’s time to use the template to write a letter, the template is called up and the user composes the letter on it, and saves this as a document separately from the template itself, and, of course, in a different location.
You can also create your own Letterhead Templates on many different word processors. In Microsoft Word, it’s even easier, as they offer a wide variety of templates as integral parts of the system. You, as a user, can call up any one of those templates, modify it, and save it under a new name. In Microsoft Word, there is a specific location to save all templates.
You can also create your own complexly original Letterhead Template just as you would any other document. You save this, too, as a template, and you will have this new template available to you when you need to compose a new letter. Of course, this way engenders much more effort on your part.
You, the user, can call up this new Letterhead Template any time you need it, just as you can call up any of the original templates. Of course, you can create any number of templates to suit your varying purposes and needs.
Needless to say, using Letterhead Templates will save you a great deal of time, and makes the effort involved in creating the template well worth while. When you create your template, give special credence to choosing an honorific that is appropriate and modern. “Dear Sir” is obsolete. The modern equivalent is “Dear Sir or Madam”.
