Big Lots was first introduced in 1985 by the Consolidated Stores Corp which was originally a company founded in 1967 by Sol Shenk. The store became popular for selling brand name close outs at substantially reduced prices. It retained its popularity and grew over 1400 retail locations across 48 states. If an applicant is interested in a sales associate position in one of their stores, they may use the store locator on the site to find a store near them. Big Lots prefers applicants for these position to visit the store and apply in person. This gives potential candidates an opportunity to see the space they would be working in, meet the staff first hand, and if meeting the hiring manager, making a great first impression. Thus it’s often a good idea to have information pertaining to job applications readily available, dress appropriately and show up with a friendly attitude.

In order to apply for a management or corporate position with Big Lots, one may simply visit their site, www.biglots.com. From here, applicants may select the ‘Careers’ link in the bottom right hand part of the page. This will open the career center page of the site. Applicants may read a brief introduction to careers with Big Lots and/or take advantage of an optional video. There will be several sections available to explore; General Office Careers, Store Careers, Distribution Center Careers, and a job search area where one may define a location or position as criteria. This will direct the browser to list the available selected positions which fit the applicant’s wishes. Each link will open to a page with the job description, qualifications for the position, specific abilities required and location. The bottom of job description page will give the candidate a link to apply online.

Once the ‘Apply’ button is selected the browser will open a short form where the applicant may input their identity and contact information. In addition, there will be an opportunity to copy and paste both a cover letter and a resume for the applicant’s inquiry.
