Send a thank you letter for any kind of gift you receive, whether it’s for a wedding or for another special occasion. Aside from being common courtesy, showing gratitude will make you (and the recipient) feel good and build your relationship with the person who gave you the gift. If you have many thank you notes to write, it’s best to follow a few guidelines and perhaps rely on a template to write them more efficiently.

Tips and Guidelines
- Make a list of people who gave you gifts if you have many to write.
- Think about your relationship with the person who gave you the gift when writing.
- Consider how you will use the gift and what you think about it.
- Keep it short: about four to six sentences.
- Use a personal, sincere tone.
- Be specific about your relationship and the gift.
- Handwrite the note.
- Mail the letter(s) within two weeks.
How to Write
Address the recipient as you would in person, beginning with “Dear.” So if you’d normally address the person by his or her first name, don’t use “Mr.” and the person’s last name.
Next, immediately thank the person for the gift, and name the gift specifically, rather than just writing “Thank you so much for the gift.” Then write specifically why you like the gift, what you will do with it, and maybe what it means to you. For example, if you received tickets to a professional sports event, write how excited you are to be there or how thrilling seeing the game will be. Use genuinely warm words here if you can. They will make the reader feel more appreciated.
Then you can add a line about how much you enjoyed that person’s company or how you look forward to seeing him or her again. Again, be specific and say what you enjoyed about their company or why you look forward to seeing them again.
Finish by thanking them once more and then conclude with a warm note, such as “With warm regards,” “Love,” or “Very sincerely,” and sign below.
