An internship thank you letter is highly encouraged after an individual or company accepted your role for a period of time for training, which is a valuable opportunity to develop a career. It is important in life to keep in touch with those that have given a start or boost to one’s career experiences and the thank you letter serves as a way of appreciating the effort undertaken by the individual who trained you.

In addition to being basic courtesy, thanking your supervisors and co-workers will leave a good impression, and make them more willing to offer you employment or act as references and contacts.

Guidelines

1. Use formal, business-letter formatting and language.

2. Keep the letter three to four short paragraphs in length.

3. Do not use exaggerated language or flattery. Be genuine.

4. Use specific examples of what you gained from the internship.

How to Write

The letter should have business formatting at the top, which requires your name, the date, and then the recipient’s name, title, and address. Then skip a line and open your letter with “Dear [Recipient’s first name],”

In the first paragraph, offer a genuine but not exaggerated general thank you statement, such as “Thank you sincerely for giving me the opportunity to work as your judicial intern.” Then you can add another general statement about how you gained more understanding of your profession or goals, or how you valued the experience.

In the second paragraph, give specific examples of how the experience developed you professionally. Think about what you learned that you could not have learned in a classroom, and specifically mention anything your supervisor sat you down and taught you or mentored you in. Cite several instances.

Next, say a few things about how your internship has altered your career path. Did it make you more certain, for example, that you want to be a local reporter? Or perhaps you have found that you are more interested in pursuing a career only partially related to the work you did at the internship.

Finally, write something about how you will remember the experience and that you would like to stay in touch. Here is a good place to request a recommendation letter if you intend to do so. Then thank the recipient once more and end the letter with “With sincere thanks,” or a similar sentiment, and sign below. Feel free to use warm, expressive language as long as it is sincere and not flattery.
