How to Become a Notary Public in Kentucky

  • Requirements
    • Must be at least 18 years of age.
    • Must be a resident of the county of which application is being made or must be an employee in the state of Kentucky.
    • Must be of good character and morals.
    • Must be capable of executing the duties of a notary public as lawfully imposed.

Step 1 – Download Handbook and Complete Application

You must download the handbook and take the time to study the information and instructions enclosed. You will then complete your application. Once you’ve completed your application you will include a check or certified funds in the amount of $10 made payable to:

Step 2 – Notification and Completion of Commission with County Clerk’s Office

After your application has been considered, your Certificate of Appointment will be sent directly to the County Clerk’s office for completion of commission and administration of oath. A written notice will be sent to you at the same time that the certificate is being forwarded to the County Clerk. You will need to contact your County Clerk’s office for their individual procedures with regard to presenting bond and taking your oath. You must complete this process within 30 days of notification or you will have to begin the process over.

You will need to be prepared to:

  • Take your oath of office
  • Post your bond
  • File and record your commission with the County Clerk

Step 3 – Order Your Seal and Supplies

After you have completed all of the steps above, it will be time to order your notarial supplies. You may order your supplies from any company who provides notary products. Once you have received your notary supplies, you will be prepared to begin your practice as a Kentucky State Notary Officer.
