A Notary Public in Louisiana is a public officer commissioned by the Governor to serve the public with regard to non-contentious matters regarding signatures, business dealings and oaths. An impartial witness.

    • Must be at least 18 years of age.
    • Must be a resident of the state or a lawfully admitted alien who resides in the state of Louisiana.
    • Must be fluent with regard to reading, writing and speaking in the English Language.
    • Must have received a high school diploma or equivalent.
    • Must not have been convicted of any felony or if so must have been pardoned.
    • Must meet all requirements that have been established for each and every commission sought.

How to Become a Notary Public in Louisiana

Step 1 – Application to Qualify and Exam Registration – Complete your Application to Qualify in paper form or online. Once you’ve completed this application you will receive and ID and password to register for your exam necessary to become a notary in the state of Louisiana. The deadline to get your application in must be no later than 45 days prior to your examination.

Step 2 – Test Preparation and Examination – Although no courses or classes are required it’s strongly recommended that you study for your notary examination. Since there are only two examinations annually, you will want to be fully prepared to pass it the first time. You can join an online study group or you may purchase a notary study guide for $90 by filling out the order form.

Examinations are administered by the Secretary of State the first Friday in June and the same in December. Exam fee is $75 to be paid at the time of the examination.

Step 3 – Commission and Finalization of Requirements – Once you have completed and passed your exam, you will be required to purchase a surety bond and errors and omissions bond, both in the amounts of $10,000 respectively and for a five year duration. You will require the following documents:

  • Two properly executed Original Oaths of Office. One will be file with your Parish Clerk of Court and one will be filed with the Secretary of State.
  • The official signature page
  • Original or Certified copies of your surety bond and/or errors and omissions policies.
  • Include a $35.00 check or money order payable to the Secretary of State.

Step 4 – Order Seal and Supplies – There is no requirement by state law for any notary to purchase or use a seal or journal, however it is recommended for your own legal protection. Should you decide you would like to order supplies you can purchase them from any company who provides notary supplies.
