Two key advantages that door hangers offer are that they are inexpensive and allow you to target your customers effectively. Generally, you can hire an advertising company to print many custom-made, high-quality hangers for just tens of dollars, and for a little more you can purchase thousands of hangers. Of course, you can produce hangers for even less by finding an independent graphic artist or creating the hangers yourself.
You can also target customers effectively. For example, if you run a sandwich shop next to a college campus, you can use door hangers in the neighborhoods where lots of college students live, rather than using them in every neighborhood. All you have to do is figure out where your customers live. Door hangers can also be more effective because people don’t automatically lump them in with the “junk mail” that arrives in the mailbox.
Creating the Door Hanger
Door hangers should be printed on thick paper such as 14- or 16-point card stock. Most door hangers are approximately the size of a standard 8.5-by-11-inch sheet of paper divided in half vertically (about 4 inches by 11 inches). You can vary the length a bit however, to make 6-inch or 9-inch hangers.
Deciding what information to include is important as well. A large depiction of your trademark image and slogan should almost certainly be at the top of the door hanger to grab the reader’s attention. You should also include promotional messages and any basic information you think the reader might need to know. Consider which types of fonts and graphics mesh well with your type of business and would be appealing to your targeted customers.
Finally, you could reserve the very bottom portion of the hangers for coupons or business cards that the resident can simply rip from the hanger. These can be very effective in incentivizing a purchase.
