Form N-400 is used for the purpose of acquiring U.S. Naturalization (Citizenship) for those who did not acquire citizenship as a birth right.

You may qualify for citizenship if you are at least 18 years of age and have been a permanent resident for at least 5 years. If you’re married to a U.S. Citizen then you may apply for naturalization after only 3 years.
Regardless of your status there will be several requirements steps that will need to be taken to achieve United States Citizenship. Regardless of your decision, you must be certain that all information requested is provided as, if you do not follow all of the instructions you may be denied citizenship or there will be extensive delays.
How to Apply
Step 1 – Application Preparation – Complete the worksheet for naturalization eligibility provided above. Get an application (N-400)- Application for Naturalization.
Step 2 – Application – Complete your N-400 application.
Step 3 – Passport Photo’s – Have two passport photographs taken and purchase them for inclusion in your application process.
Step 4 – Documents – Collect all of the required documents listed on the checklist provided at the top of this page.
Step 5 – Create a File – Create a file of your own and keep copies of absolutely everything you send to USCIS.
Step 6 – Send All Information to USCIS – Send your application, passport photographs, all required documents, and fee (Cash is not accepted) to the appropriate Lockbox Facility or Service Center.
Step 7 – Finger Printing – Once you’ve sent in all of your initial required documents, you will receive a letter from USCIS to get fingerprinted. Go to the location provided for fingerprinting. If USCIS requests further documentation, submit the requested documents. USCIS will then schedule your interview.
Step 8 – Interview – Be on time at the location provided for your scheduled interview. Take all additional requested documents including your state issued ID and Permanent Residence Card. During your interview you will be asked questions by the interviewer about your background and your application. They will then administer Civic’s and English tests. At that point you will receive the status of your case.
Step 9 – Taking your Oath – Once you have taken and successfully interviewed and passed your testing you will be provided a ceremony date or you will be offered the opportunity to take your oath in the office that day. If you go to the ceremony, you will check in on your ceremony date. You will then return your permanent residence card and answer questions regarding what you’ve done since your interview. You will then take your Oath of Allegiance.
Step 10 – Certificate of Naturalization – Finally, you will receive your Certificate of Naturalization. Enjoy your new life as a Citizen of the United States of America.
